Today we want to talk about the first situation: fires. FAROS is an outstanding drone that will help firefighters to look for victims or the source of fire in a building.
FAROS. ‘Flying’ fire safety
A fire is one of the most dangerous situations in a building. Even more if we are talking about high-rise buildings where fire can spread really quickly. This makes really difficult for the firefighters to go into these buildings and look for any victim or even find the source of the fire.
However, technology can be a great ally to beat fire. FAROS is an amazing drone that can go into a building in fire and look for people inside. It doesn’t matter if there is a lot of smoke or if it has to pass through narrow spaces. FAROS can fly, crawl walls and is fire-resistant.
FAROS makes use of a 2D laser, an altimeter and an Inertia Measurement Unit sensor to navigate autonomously. Thanks to those sensors and a thermal-imaging camera, it can find people inside the building, as well as the fire-ignition point. Thanks to the implementation of aramid fibers, it is fireproof and flame-retardant. Regarding the tests developed by KAIST researchers, it can endure the heat over 1,000ºC. This development will be able to save many lifes in the future as Professor Myung says:
“As cities become more crowded with skyscrapers and super structures, fire incidents in these high-rise buildings are life-threatening massive disasters. The FAROS can be aptly deployed to the disaster site at an early stage of such incidents to minimize the damage and maximize the safety and efficiency of rescue mission.”
