Pumps inspired in birds. Another case of biomimicry.

Two researches from the University of New York have developed a new type of pumps. Birds have been their main source of inspiration.

Currently, pumps use a rotor to work. That makes use of the centrifugal force. The researchers have remarked that a bird can make the airflow to go in one direction while they move in other. They designed a teeth structured pump. When it opens and closes constantly, the fluid moves in one direction. Moreover, it could use the vibrations of other machines to work properly.

Researchers hope to find more solutions in nature for pumps. For instance, in the human being. The circulatory system is likely to give new and outstanding solutions similar to the bird one.

One article has been published with all the research work done with pumps. You can read it here.
